House Modifications
- Deck: 24 cards — A through 9 in each suit (no Joker).
- Game Length: Play continues until each player has dealt twice. Scores may exceed 10 points.
- Players: Games are for 4 players. If fewer than 4 are present, play online at TricksterCards.com.
- Team Assignment: Teams & Scores determines teams; seating is first-come, first-claimed.
- First Deal: The first person to physically grab the cards becomes the first dealer.
- No Stealing the Deal: The dealer must re-deal in the event of a misdeal.
- Euchre Penalty: A euchre or renege on a lone hand is worth 4 points, not 2.
- Stick the Dealer: If everyone passes twice, the dealer must choose trump.
Key Highlights from Foster’s Rules
- Cutting the Deck: Each cut must leave at least 4 cards in both packets.
- Dealing: Deal each player 2 cards then 3 cards or 3 then 2. Do not mix 2 cards and 3 cards in same round.
- Turned-Down Trump: Leave the rejected trump card face-up at the bottom of the deck and sticking out enough to see.
- Calling Out of Turn: If a player calls trump out of turn, their team may not call that suit as trump.
- Renege (Revoke):
- Not official until the trick is completed.
- If corrected before the trick ends, the incorrect card becomes an exposed card.
- Exposed Cards:
- Any prematurely seen card must remain face-up and be played at the next legal opportunity.
- Lead Out of Turn:
- Must be called before the trick ends.
- The lead card becomes an Exposed Card. Cards played after can be picked up.
- Opposing team may choose the lead suit for the offending team’s next lead. The player to the right of the offender makes the call.
- Past Tricks:
- You may not re-examine past tricks during hand play.
- Keep them face-down and orderly in case review is needed.
Etiquette Reminders
- Cut the Deck: Slide the top portion toward the dealer and let them complete the cut.
- Going Alone: Move deck toward your partner to make your solo decision obvious.
- Ordering Up: The dealer should discard before picking up the trump card. The discarded card should be placed on the bottom of the deck face down and turned sideways to make it obvious that the dealer discarded.
Player Conduct – “Don’t Be a Jerk!”
- Be Kind with Mistakes
Kindly correct others if they play incorrectly. No penalties the first time — unless it’s a repeated offense or the outcome could affect a winning spot near the end of a tournament. - Respect the Game
Even if winning isn’t important to you, it may be to others. One person’s mistake can ruin another’s rare chance at a win. - Bring Good Vibes
Smile, be nice, and make friends. If you didn’t laugh with others at least a few times, the problem might not be the game. - Don’t Be Creepy
Seriously. Just don’t. We have a system to discreetly exchange contact information and interest.
Let’s play Euchre the Darby way — friendly, fair, and fun!
